SUGGESTION FOR UTILIZING RECESS ON EITHER SIDE OF FIREPLACE (PAGES IO, 14 AND 2l)

of folding-table, such as the so-called “ gate-leg ” table, is to be recom-
mended for a small room if only from the fact that it can be folded up and
lifted on one side when the room is cleaned out, thus becoming a labour-
saving device. Another form of table is illustrated on page io. In this case
the ends fold up over the centre part, as indicated by the dotted lines.
When closed a compact piece results, taking up little space but sufficient
for the use of two or three people. One advantage of this design is the
absence of stretchers below.
There are many opportunities in the various rooms for the lady of the
house, if she possesses taste and ingenuity, to add to the decorative interest
of her home without resorting to the shops. The cushions on pages i
and 8 and the design on page 24 are suggestions for a modern treatment of
patchwork. Where scraps of richly coloured material are available or pro-
curable many interesting colour-notes can be introduced in the form of
cushions, bedspreads, or other items which would not be difficult for the
amateur to make. Simple applique designs, easily carried out with various
braidings, are indicated on pages 15, 19, and 2 1. Sometimes also a useful
note of colour can be introduced by means of a simple painted box, as
shown on the mantelshelf on page 6 ; while in the same drawing a plain
rectangular mirror is introduced over the fireplace, painted a brilliant
colour. Such a frame could be bought cheaply and finished to suit the
scheme of the room. Lamp and electric light shades also provide unlimited
scope for original and effective treatment. For a simple and economical
