ON THE DECORATION AND FURNISHING OF SMALL ROOMS
was left. Then, removing the drawer at the bottom, she proceeded to saw
straight through the sides at a point about a foot from the floor. The mir-
ror was taken out and refixed in the door the reverse way so that it was still
available for use when the door was opened. Finally, two plain panels of
wood, about a quarter of an inch thick, were obtained from a carpenter
and nailed over the side panels, and another piece, with a small moulding
worked round, served to cover up the door. The whole was then papered
down and given several coats of white paint, and is now in use as a cup-
board for coats in a small hall. Its present appearance is shown in the
lower illustration on page 16. The operations described above may sound
complicated, but these structural alterations in actual fact were accom-
plished in an hour or two and at a cost of a few shillings. This enterprise
has been described at some length mainly because it illustrates the extent
to which ingenuity can overcome some of the problems that arise when a
home has to be equipped at a small cost.
