DECORATIVE AND APPLIED ART
IN the previous issue of this Year-Book reference was made to the
British Institute of Industrial Art and abriefaccount given of its aims
and its possibilities as a means of developing and organizing the artis-
tic industries of the country. That some such central bureau is neces-
sary if we are to hold our own in these spheres of commercial activity, and
maintain a high aesthetic standard of production, has been realized for
•some years by all who have given the subject careful consideration. It is
therefore with satisfaction that we record the real advance during the past
year that has been made in the organization of the Institute which has
now established permanent head-quarters in spacious premises at No. 2 17
Knightsbridge, London,where its first exhibition (to be devoted to furni-
ture, ceramics, and textiles) will be held in June.
There is at the present time an increasing recognition of the need for the
training of the artistic and imaginative side of the mind, and a realization
of the value of such training in practical affairs. The tendency in the past
