members of the group. That by Frank Potter (p. 57), with its strong colour-
ing and quaint foregound, is pleasing in effect. In the “ Coster,” by Kath-
leen Hale, and the original composition by Reginald Higgins (both repro-
duced on page 61) shadows are completely excluded. The pastel landscape
by Miss Nancy Smith (p. 69) is delightful both in colour and composition;
while the single figure by Carlo Norway (p. 71) makes a strong appeal
with the beauty and rhythm of its lines and the harmony of the restrained
colouring.
Sixteen years ago the “Societa Umanitaria” founded schools and work-
shops in Italy for the purpose of training craftsmen in the free expression
of their talents, and of furthering the revival of the artistic industries of the
country. Even during the war efforts were made by the Society to prepare
for the coming era of peace, and to give impetus to the reawakening of
the productive energy of the nation. It aims at making its schools a centre
for craftsmen and manufacturers so that they may collaborate in organized
efforts to develop Industrial Art. To this end it was decided to arrange'
exhibitions and competitions, and to issue publications for purposes of pro-
paganda. The first exhibition of the Society was held at Milanduring Sep-
tember and October of last year. Each exhibition is to be of a special cha-
racter, either concerned solely with the art of the province, with parti-
cular branches of applied art, or with the decoration and equipment of the
town house, the country house, or public buildings. Above all, it is hoped
