DECORATIVE AND APPLIED ART
wrought iron work is illustrated on page 102. This entrance gate was
designed by R. H. Butterworth and carried out by the Sarum Works at
Salisbury.
The embroidered curtain reproduced on page 104 is of such large dimen-
sions that it suffers very considerably in the reduction. In order to give a
better idea of the fine quality of the work and the beauty of the design and
colouring, one of the panels is shown in colours on the following page.
This curtain forms one of a pair which, together with an equally beautiful
bed-cover, Miss Ruth Rayner has executed for Sir Samuel Waring. The
embroidered panel by E. Thesiger (p. 107) is also worthy of careful study.
The Shottery Weaving School, Stratford-on-Avon, was originally started
to provide occupation for physically defective girls of the poorer classes.
As will be seen in our illustration on page 108, the work done at the school
comprises tapestry of all kinds. The whole of the woollen thread used is
homespun, and dyed with natural home-made dyes, giving agreeable and
varied effects.
In spite of the difficult conditions prevailing during the past year, many
new and excellent designs in fabrics have been put upon the market, and
amongst these Mr. Foxton’s productions stand high, both as regards the
design, colouring, and quality of the material. Six of his latest fabrics are
shown on pages 1 1 2 to 1 15. Admirable, too, are the printed silks by
Messrs. Sefton (pp. 116 and 117), especially those reproduced in colours
designed by George Sberingham. On page 1 19 is a striking design for a
cretonne by E. Hoppe.
