THREE BUNGALOWS
DESIGNED BY MAURICE

IT is in the house of mode-
rate capacity, on a free
and open site, that the full
advantages of the bunga-
low, or single-floored house,
may be realised. Very large
bungalows are apt to become
rambling in plan, expensive to
build, and costly to maintain ;
while small houses, on two or more floors, are necessarily more cramped
and box-like and do not engender the same sense of freedom. Bunga-
lows are only suitable where a site of generous size is available, which is
necessary not only to prevent the rooms being overlooked, but also to
allow unrestricted light and air to all the rooms. If carefully arranged,
the bungalow plan may be more compact, while being more spacious than
the two-storied house of similar accommodation, and as regards con-
venience and labour-saving the bungalow form has undoubtedly the
advantage.

The three bungalows illustrated here were designed to meet post-war
conditions and limited expenditure; the greatest economy of space, cube
and material was therefore essential. The buildings were planned to
