THE GROTESQUES
them in his Scheinpart-spruch (11. 25-36), when he describes the
devilish, animal-like precursors of the Ldufer.93 Our MS furnishes
no further information regarding the part played by the demons
in the festival, but does give us the names of those who wore the
brutish disguises. The text for 1518 on f. 62V mentions "24. Jnn
Rauchen Klaidtern, .6. Jn Teuffels Klaidern"; the names of
twenty-one of the former are listed on f. i02r under the caption:
"Nachuoligendte Personen sein in Rauhen Klaidern mit vnd
vnder disem Schempart geloffen/."; the six devils are named on
f. ioov with the general description of the 1518 festival.94 Again,
for 1539, the "Teuffel" are mentioned in the text for that year on
f. 68r, as we have seen, and their names are listed on f. 69V under
the caption: "Diese Hernach geschribene Personen sint Jns
Teuffels Klaidern gelauffen."95 Finally, on f. Ilr, we find the names
of thirty-one Liiujer in leafy costumes under the caption: "Diese
Hernach Geschribne Personen seint Jn Holtz Klaidtern gelauffen."
Although these references apply to only three of the annual
festivals we may certainly assume the presence of the demons in
all, running ahead to clear the way for the Liiujer, and filling the
streets with their devilish howling.
A new series of fanciful costumes begins on f. 8or, which is
taken up by the following title in large black letter, with two
very ornate majuscules: "Nachuolgende Personen sein Anno,
1518, mit den Schempart geloffen vnd eingetheylt wordten."96 The
first of these supernumerary Liiujer is prefaced in the usual man-
ner of f. 8ov by a text in the cursive hand of our MS:97
93 "Voran in spitz her rendt/ Etwas bey neuntzig paren,/ Die all geklaydet waren/
Inn fechschwentz rauch vnnd zottet,/ Ir scheinpart wiist unnd knottet/ Gleich
den lowen und katzen,/ Unnd andern grewling fratzen,/ Aller sach unnd gestalt,/
Wie man die teuffel malt./ Hetten an ihn schaf-glocken,/ Warffen fewer erschrocken./
Die machten raum der schar."
94 These names show an interesting mixture of classes: "N: Petter Vischer Diener/
Emmerling Plattner Vnnd sein gesell./ N: Das Ayrers Diener/ Marthin Von Plauen,
Vnnd HannS Holtzschuer."
95 Of the nineteen names given here, twelve have the trade of the Laufer appended:
"Ferber, Kertzenmacher, Puettner, Khiirschner, Pierbrey, Rottschmidt, Moller,
Balbierer, Spiegler."
96 Although some of the miniatures in this series appear in a few Schembart books,
e.g., MS No. 2, only MSS Nos. I, 46, 47a, 60, contain them all.
97 This hand is used throughout the explanatory material that goes with the series,
except for the black letter used in some initial words and captions.
