THE GROTESQUES
A problem presents itself here in the repetition of names for the
costumes above, two names of those in the 1518 group appearing
twice, Caspar Gannser and Castell Fugger, and one, Gderg Hoff-
man, three times; of the 1539 series, almost all the names are
also repeated on f. Ilr as having run in 1539 disguised in "Holtz
Klaidtern," the moss costume of the men of the woods. Further-
more, two of the three named as captains for 1518, on f. 62V and
f. ioiv, HannB Tuecher and Vlrich Haller, who should normally
have worn the mi-parti costume of the whole Schembart company,
as figured in the miniature on f. 6jr, are also cited here on f. 85V
for the card costume. The possibility that the same name does
not belong to the one individual is hardly likely; no repetition
occurs among all the other names in our MS except for the same
captain in several years.122 It is not beyond likelihood that the
natural whimsicality of the period inspired the variation of
costume of the captains. Moreover, infatuation with his person
and a desire for self-glorification may well have dictated to who-
ever could afford it a different costume for each day of the Schem-
bartlauf, particularly in years of more sumptuous festivals, as in
1518 and 1539. Perhaps this was more generally true in the
Schembartlauf than we can tell from the MSS, in which only
Gderg Hoffman, Castell Fugger, and Casper Gannser are credited
with sporting several costumes. In the case of the latter, his name
appears on f. i02r also, as "CaBpar GannBer," among those who
dressed as demons in 1518, "in Rauhen Klaidern," probably his
last disguise in the festival. It is further interesting to note that
the pairs of names as we have seen them above for 1539 are kept
together in the list on f. Ilr; in several instances, however, dis-
crepancies occur in the form in which the names are cited. Thus
we find "HieronimuB Tueher" instead of "Gderg Tuecher"; "Lux
Geuger" instead of "Laux Dennger"; "Maister Paullus Jn der
Peidt" instead of "Maister Paullus Behaim Jn der Peim," and
122 No doubt the "HannB KreB," who served as captain in the years 1464, 1465,
1468, and again thirty years later in 1495, represents two generations of the family;
in all other cases no great interval elapses between the years for which a captain is
named more than once, e.g., Caspar Baumgartner: 1496, 1498, 1499, 1503. K. F. v.
Frank, Kress Family History (Vienna: C. Gerold's Son, 1930), p. 145-6, considers
the captains named "Kress" to have been the same member of the family.
