Umm idj-Djimal (Thantia?)

213

The fragments of sculpture consist, almost entirely, of pieces of drapery, some of
them well executed, others stiff and crudely wrought. One fragment, found outside
the walls, near the chapel outside the East Gate, is the lower part of a torso (Ill. 197),

Ill. 197. Torso in Basalt.

from knees to waist, 40 cm. high. It belonged to a statue a little less than life size,
and compares favorably with the remains of sculpture from about the ruined temples
of the Djebel Hauran.
