DUSAR.ES AND THE COIN-TYPES OF BOSTRA. NOTES.

1 The present appendix is a revised version of my article: nouvelle representation de Dusar'es et autres types de
Bostra^ which appeared in the Revue Nzimismatiquc (1911, p. 69). The most important change to be noted in the elimi-
nation from the coinage under Caracalla of the bronzes bearing the title COLONIA, which places the foundation of the colony
in the reign of Elagabalus (see p. xxxii).

3 Numismatique de la Terre sainte^ p. 364.
4 Ed. Bekker, p. 502.
5 Dalman, Petra und seine Felsheiligt burner^ Leipzig 1908, p. 70. There are two reliefs at Petra in which Dalman sees
an anthropomorphic representation of the god (p. 74, nos. 276 and 47ε). One depicts a warrior holding a wreath in his
upraised right hand; the other represents a horseman. But Dalman’s arguments for the identification are not convincing.

There is no doubt that the number of baetylia has reference only to different aspects of the same divinity. We find as many
as ten on one of the reliefs of Petra.

19 Meyer, Die Israeliten und Hire Naclibarstamme. p. 268, n. 1. On an inscription of Soada (Waddington, Inscr.
grecques et latines de la Syrie, no. 2312) the epithet ανίκητου has usually been referred to the two words [Δο]υαάρεος ίε[ον]
which appear in the second line. The inscription, however, is so mutilated that the reading is anything but certain, and it
is impossible to use it as an argument for the equation Dusares = Sol.

36 On a coin of Julia Mamaea (Catalogue, no. 40. Fig. 28) a small figure resembling a centaur is to be seen at the
Tyche’s feet on either side.

38 Cf. on this point Drexler, Zeit. f. Num. xm, 1885, pp. 281 ff.
39 The coin has never been completely described, and for this reason observers have failed to grasp the exact significance
of the type. It is cited or described by Drexler, I. c.; Hoffmann, Cat. de la Collection du Mis. de Moustiers (Paris, 1872);
