96. Stele. Found in the eastern section of the town in the house of a Christian
named Sabbuah Abu Farah. The stone is used as a roof-slab and is set face down
on the beams by which the ends of the face are concealed. The face is blackened
by smoke. Height of visible portion 95 cm.; width 29 cm. The inscribed part of the
stone is highly finished and the letters are well carved. In fact the Expedition found
no stele at is-Summakiyat as good as this specimen. The rows of letters are separated
by incised lines. Height of letters 8—S1/;, cm.

Αννιανος Εράνου ετ(ών) κ/.
Annianus {son) of zImran.
The copy of D. and M. reads ANOBANOC, restored tentatively as
’Αν]ο[(3ι]αυός. Clermont-Ganneau, Ι.Λ.Ο. v (1903), p. 386, taking exception
to the name 'Ανοβιανός, proposed to read ‘Φλωριανός or a similar Roman name.’
Our copy thus justifies at least the spirit of M. Clermont-Ganneau’s con-
jecture. The name ’Αννιανός occurs in other inscriptions from Syria; see Wad.

Αζίζος Οθραυ ετ(ωυ) ί[τ/] (?)
Αζίζος, Arabic ζΑζϊζ, we have met already in no. 62. It is a
common name. Οβρος is the equivalent of the Arabic Witr. Perhaps we
should read θ[ι]0ρου. The form Ουάρος is found in no. 117.
