Inscr. 547· Scale 1 : 20.

By (the} provision and lender (the} direction of (the} magistrates, Megethius, (son}
of Germanus, for the second time, and Cheilon, (son} of Malchion, the temple-enclosure
was erected from (the} foundations. In (the} year 215. (320-321 a. d.).

Right dovetail: ETC Richter, corr. to E I C Franz.
The magistrates here mentioned are, as suggested by Waddington, the duumvirs
of the colony, for Bosra seems to have had the regular colonial system of admini-
stration, with quaestors (no. 540) and aediles (no. 550). We have interpreted B in 1. 2
as equivalent to bis or iterum, as found regularly in inscriptions of consuls, and
occasionally of duumvirs; see e.g. C.I.L. x 885 and 886. The name ΜεγεΘως is found
also in no. 572s, in the form Μεγε'Θίς in no. 621, and (as a feminine) in Wad. 2386;
the feminine Μεγεθεά? occurs in A.A.R.S. in 372. On the meaning of εκ προνοίας καί
σπουόΥς see no. 546.

548. Block. Built into the south wall of the Castle, near the third tower south-
west from the entrance-bridge. The stone is upside down. The inscription is on a
sunken dovetailed plate; a few letters at the beginning of the lines are concealed by
the wall. Length of visible portion of the plate about 33 cm.; height 27 cm. Height
of letters 3—4χ/3 cm.

Inscr. 548. Scale I : 10.
