Division III Section A Part 6
In the preliminary report of the inscription Littmann restored the name as [Κ]ρείτων,
and M. Clermont-Ganneau in a footnote suggested [Β]ρείτων, i. e. Britto. Further examination
of the stone, however, shows nothing but a liasta at the beginning of 1. i, and makes
it evident that the letter was either Γ or T. Τρίτων occurs as a man’s name, e.g. C.I.G.
2905 = Inschr. v. Priene, no. 37, and it is certainly a suitable name for a trumpeter.
For transcriptions of military terms, analogous to βουκινατωρ, see Magie, de Vocab. Soli.
(Leipzig, 1905), p. 39.
773. Fragment. A corner of a small block which may have served as part of
the pedestal for a statue or a votive-offering. The stone was taken by the Expedition
and is now in the Library of Princeton University. The upper and lower surface of
the fragment are unbroken. The corner is chipped. Height of the stone 7% cm. The
inscription is on two adjacent faces, and the letters are incised on a sunken band.
Length of face a ιό1^ cm. at the upper edge, 18 cm. at the lower, of face b 7^ cm.
Height of the band 2 cm., of the letters i1/2-2 cm.
Waddington, no. 23690?; Littmann (from this copy), J?. A. v (1905), p. 411, no. 8.
Inscr. 773. Scale 1:5.
Waddington’s epigraphical text arranges the faces in the correct order, but they are
reversed in his Explications.
774. Fragment of ornament. Found in the ruins at the entrance to the “Theatron”.
Length 18 cm. The letters are incised on a band. Height of the band S1^ cm. Height
of letters 31/3 cm. Copied by Magie in 1909.
Inscr. 774. Scale 1 : 10.

The arrangement and the size of the letters suggest that this fragment and no. 774
are parts of the same inscription, but any restoration seems impossible.
