Division III Section B Part i

824. UMM IT-TUWENEH. Top of a ciborium(?). A stone lying in the ruins
of a church west of the village. See Div. II, Ill. 6 and 7. Upon the stone is carved,
in relief, a disk 46l/3 cm. in diameter. Within the disk the following monogram is

executed in relief.
Possibly this monogram expresses a date.
If so, the central letter must be the hundreds
figure. It appears to be ψ. But έτους φνα : zVz
(the} year 551, i. e. 239-40 a.d., is far too early
for such an inscription, which, judged by the
forms if its letters, belongs to the sixth century.
Perhaps then the central letter is really an ω,
the upper ends of which have been brought to-
gether to join with the upright arm of the cross.
In that case έτους md may be read, or 539-40 A.D.,
a date which, in itself, is highly probable. I am inclined, however, to doubt that this

is a date at all.

825. Church lintel, 577 a.d. Fragment, apparently part of a lintel, now
used as a support of the roof of a modern house. It is broken at both ends
ΤΙΕΙΤΤΛΗ TM and at bottom. Its length is 1.03 m., and its height 49 cm.
E Λ E Y E 0 (disk) n A little to the right of the present center is a disk, 49 cm. in
0 Y E Η TT UJ I diameter, containing a cross: in the upper, left-hand quadrant of
the disk is a figure like the letter C, the significance of which is unknown to me: the
right upper quadrant is now blank: the lower quadrants contain the letters A and ω.
Along the top of the stone is a plain border, 7 cm. wide, below which both inscription
and the disk are executed in relief. Between the first and second lines of the inscription
is a space 3 cm. wide, between the second and third lines a space of 8 cm. The
fragment is broken at the bottom through the bottoms of the letters of the third line
and through the bottoms of the A and ω of the disk. The letters of the inscription
are 7% to 9 cm. high.
Another part of this same lintel is the following.
826. The same lintel. A fragment which evidently belongs with the foregoing,"
found in the open country, a short distance west of the town. It is broken at both
Uy Δ IKA IO ends and at the bottom. Its length is 441/., cm. at the top, and its greatest
EENAYT height 541/» cm. The border at the top is 6'/s cm. broad, the letters
MAlU- 9^2 cm. high.
As Placed together the two fragments are as follows:
1. [Ayjrt st πυλ'/j τού Κ(υρίθ)υ’ otzatoft] This (is} the gate of the Lord: {the}
2. [εΐσ]ελεύσον[τ]ε εν αΰτ[γ]. righteous shall enter in it. In {the}
3. [*Ετ]ους ηπω’, [ρ;](νος) Mottov . . year 888, month May.., indiction 10.
4- [ή# [«’]· iMaY’ 577> a.d.)
The text is a quotation from Psalm cxvn, 20. The verse is very common on
Syrian lintels, especially those of the sixth century. Compare Nos. 907, 915, 929 etc.
