Division III Section B Part 2

inscription from North Dana, A.A.P.S. ill, 91 : Του στ]αυρού πα[ρ](ο)υτος εκύρος οΰ
zfaTtffj/’jfft.1 Doubtless such inscriptions reflect the well-known passage in Matthew, xvi,
18: επί ταύτρ τη πέτρα οικοδομήσω μου την εκκλησίαν^ καί πύλαι "Αιδου ου πατισχύσουσιυ αυτής?
Compare also passages in the liturgies, such as Κύριε. ... .
If this reading
is correct, the present inscription furnishes another example of the superstition that
the cross had magic power to avert evil from the buildings: see A.A.E.S. hi, p. 19 ff.
945. Lintel. Lying upon the ground, about 100 yards northwest of the entrance
to the barracks. It is broken at both ends. The present length is 1.41 m., the height
54 cm. In the center is a square, 76 cm. broad, within which is a disk inclosing a cross
and surrounded by a vine ornament. At the left end is a part of another disk. There
was doubtless a third disk near the right end. The disks, cross and vine are in relief
below the surface. The letters, 17 to 21 cm. high, are incised between incised lines.

See the commentary on No. 910.
946. IL-HOMEH. Lintel. Two pieces of a lintel, lying near the well. The
first is broken at both ends. It is 1.33 m. long, and 39 cm. high. In the center is
a disk with a cross, in relief, 38 cm. in diameter, 55 cm. from the left end and 40 cm.
from the right. The second piece is broken at the left, possibly also at the right: it
is 32 cm. long at the top and 38 cm. at the bottom. The letters, 8 to 10 cm. high,
are incised. The inscription appears to be complete. Copied by Dr. Littmann.

These words are taken from Psalm xc, 1 : they occur on other lintels in Syria, e.g.
A.A.E.S. hi, 207, 267, 315. As for the date, it is possible that two figures, the tens
and hundreds, have been lost. On the other hand, it is possible that the year 7
mentioned here is the year in the indiction series, and that the date was not determined
in any other way. A few cases occur in which only the year in the indiction series
is given, e.g. No. 930 above, and A.A.P.S. in, 368.
947. STABL CANTAR. Fortress, 577-8 a.d. Lintel of a fortress, in situ.
See Div. II, b, p. 63 f. The whole stone is 3.20 m. long, and 76 cm. high. In the
center is a disk in relief, 47 cm. in diameter, inclosing a cross and the letters A and LU.
The letters, 7 to 9 cm. high, are incised. The first line is above the mouldings: it
is 2.56 m. long. The second line is in a plate formed by incised lines, and is crossed
