falling- it has faced about. In the east side of this vestibule is a door-frame belonging
to one of a row of small buildings whose rear walls are about 25 feet west of the
Sergius Church. Probably there has been some rebuilding here; but I believe that the
inscribed lintel belonged to the outer doorway of a private dwelling; that it faced south-
ward, opening upon a street which led westward from the Sergius Church: on the
opposite side of this same street are Nos. 1083 and 1084. See Div. Il, B, p. 191.
The first line of the inscription is 1.92 m. long, and is carved in deep, broad, clear
lines: the second line is 1.87 m. long, and less well carved. The letters are 7 cm. high.

Inscr. 1082. From a drawing. Scale I : 20.

For this method of writing out numerals in full, see the commentary on the pre-
ceding inscription.

1083. House i, 485 a.d. On a lintel, apparently that of a simple dwelling-house,
on the south side of the street mentioned under No. 1082, a short distance west of
the Sergius Church. Published in A.A.E.S. in, 63. See also Div. 11, b, p. 190. The
lintel is ornamented with a trapezoidal door-cap, two fasciae of which bear the in-
scription: the upper one of these measures 1.47 m. by cm., the lower 1.42 by δ1 2^.
The letters, 4 to 6 cm. high, are incised: they are rather rude and irregular in form.
The whole face of the stone is badly weathered and covered with lichen.

1084. House, Group i, 485 a.d. Lintel of a doorway at the east side of the
foregoing, and facing on the same street. The building, to which the present door-
way belonged, has disappeared. Like the lintel beside it, this also is ornamented with
a trapezoidal doorcap. The first line of the inscription is on the lowest fascia of the
cap, excepting the last letter, which is beyond the moulding: this fascia measures
1.11 m. by 8 cm. The second and third lines are below the cap, on the plain face
