The forms of the letters in this inscription, especially those of B and Δ, are
noteworthy.
1087. Tower, 551 a.d. Lintel of a building, probably a tower, on the east side
of the street leading to the Church of Paul and Moses, a short distance from the
gateway described under No. 1077. The building is now in ruins: its ground plan is
nearly, if not exactly a square, and it seems to have been at least three stories high.
High up on the front wall is a stone, resting on two brackets, and having in its center
a hole directly over the entrance to the building. Published in A.A.T.S. hi, 60. See
also Div. II, b, p. 189. A.A. x (1907), p. 284, No. 3.
58 cm., and is perfectly smooth except
for the single line of incised letters
along the bottom and, above that,
in the center, an ornament carved
in relief, which appears to be a con¬
ventionalized wreath crossed by a conventionalized palm-branch. The stone is cracked
and broken at the bottom in one place, so that five or six letters of the inscription
have been lost. The letters are 5cm. high: the first twenty-six measure 1.02m., the
break 21cm., the remaining fourteen letters 50 cm. in length. The letters are badly
aligned and of different types, but are still legible.

The face of the lintel measures 1.81 m. by

1088. Baptistery, 567 a.d. On the lintel of the baptistery adjoining the Church
of St. Sergius, described under No. 1086. The present inscription is published in
A.A.E.S. hi, 62: see also Div. II, b, pp. 184-186. The lintel is 1.82 m. long, and has,
above the frame mouldings, an ornamental door-cap: the inscription is incised on the
space, 1 f/2 cm. wide, between the cap and the frame mouldings. The whole face of
the stone is badly weathered and covered with lichen. The letters, though small, were
originally fairly well made.
