second story of a colonnade
or portico, facing south, about
the center of the town. See
Div. II, b, p. 332. The
colonnade is formed by rectan- .
gular piers in the lower story,
and columns in the upper. The
sections of the architrave are
about 2 m. long. The first
from the east end contains five
or six signs, which look like
letters, but which neither Pro-
fessor Littmann nor I could
read. The second, third, fourth
and fifth sections bear the in-
scription, upon a fascia 12 cm.
wide. The letters are in a
single line, except the last ten,
which are in two lines: these

The last figure of the date is not absolutely certain : it may be X, instead of Y,
and, if so, the date is 563 a. d.
The name Σαακωνας is the Syriac diminutive of Isaac, in Greek form.
