russia, in the peat bog at the side of the river
Lanj (tributary of the Pripjat) near the village
of Kaplanovitshy (Pobol 1967). It is a com-
plete crook ard, except for the missing stilt
and handle (Fig. 11). This seems not to have
been fastened in the ordinary way. The open-
ing in the heel of the sole of the ard was of a
complicated shape and round above, oval be-
low. This indicates that the stilt has been in-
serted from below in order not to be easily
lifted up. In the front-end of the beam there is
a cut for joining an extension to the beam.
The basic dimensions of the ard are: length
260 cm, height 95 cm, the length of the sole
59 cm. The wood is oak. The ard is dated to
the turn of the first century A. D. Pobol sug-

gested that the Kaplanovitsky ard had had no
iron share.
In the peat-bog near the village of Tokary
in the Sumy region of the Ukraine has been
found a crook ard (Fig. 12-14) with some spe-
cial features (Shramko 1961). The overall
length is 93 cm, height 38 cm, the length of
the sole with its thin point 70 cm.
The cross section of the fore-part of the
sole is nearly round, and the point evenly
worn. Notches seen between the two sections
are the result of modern destruction and not
from a socketed iron share (Fig. 13). In the
heel of the sole there is a 5x3.5 cm square
opening, which decreases downwards to
3.3x2 cm, which is the opposite of the feature
