its being brought to the hammer, the diploma was in the possession of Mr. J. Reynolds
Gwatkin, to whom it had been left—together with the interesting ledgers and diaries of
appointments for sittings used by the illustrious painter—by Mrs. Theophila Gwatkin,
Sir Joshua's niece.
Messrs. Henry Graves & Co., who for many years past have made a point of purchas-
ing all the examples they have met with, have in their possession the following diplomas,
together with a proof in the etched state, which is of rare occurrence :—
