artists as Josef Vinecky, Johannes Mohlzahn, Oskar Schlemmer, and Georg Muche. The young archi-
tects educated at the Academy proved to be well prepared to address the problems related to the
organisation of the WUWA exhibition. The housing estate built as part of the project was one out of
eight similar developments built under the auspices of the Werkbund in Europe.
In this jubilee year, we present this monograph of the WUWA exhibition and housing estate, ana-
lyzed in the context of the Werkbund's other model housing estates, to all those interested in the
city's history and architecture.
I firmly believe that the municipal authorities in today's Wroclaw will come to appreciate the WUWA
development as they have noticed the significance of the Centennial Hall, today a UNESCO World
Heritage site, and assist in its crucially needed comprehensive revalorisation and revitalisation pro-
gramme. Almost all of the remaining Werkbund model housing estates have undergone the process
of revalorisation and regained their former glory: Stuttgart, Karlsruhe, Basel, Zurich, Vienna... Polish
architect Edgar Norwerth visited the WUWA exhibition in 1929 and it convinced him that Wroclaw
should be regarded as the most important amongst German cities in developing and promoting
modern domestic architecture. We would like to hear equally appreciative words about our city with
regard to its efforts to protect historic monuments. All existing houses of the WUWA had already
been registered in 1979.
