different from the utopian visions of many architects. The International Werkbund Exhibition in Vi-
enna focuses on the growing desire to live happily in an authentic home. The model development
features few houses whose floor plan would be too imposing or rigid to begin with or, furnished in
a way that would delight with stylish uniformity but limit the future residents' choice of furniture.
Despite the whole diversity of influences from America, Holland, France or Germany, the exhibition
only featured houses that could be built in the row system and focused on those types of houses.
In a way, it is an old-fashioned approach since gaining the freedom from the obligation to preserve
a style has become the success of ourtime, but it means rejecting the 'furniture style of 1890' only to
replace it with the 'furniture style of 1932'. This exhibition did not aim to showcase new inventions or
dwell on technical means to economise internal traffic; instead, it is concerned with how in the near
future people could live happy lives in real, authentic homes..."180
