function and was the epitome of beauty. Le Corbusier criticised his fellow architects for their fear of
simple forms and anxious disregard ofthe principles of geometry instead of accepting them as the
underlying framework of reference.391
Wolf viewed the heterogeneity of forms in the context of modern resources available to com-
plete the task. On the one hand, such affordable materials as basic and hollow bricks or iron angle
bars dictated the geometrical forms, reducing construction costs and improving the structure's abil-
ity to stand up to the elements. Wolf advocated a no-nonsense approach. On the other hand, new
construction methods, like cast concrete, made it possible to expand the formal vocabulary, while
the introduction of flat roofs enabled the architect to view the building as an arrangement of volu-
metric masses, an approach which inevitably resulted in higher construction costs. Wolf criticised
some of the buildings for their too sophisticated architecture as missing the point of the WUWA
initiative: developing new solutions for affordable, mass-produced housing.
