This admired and accomplished aftrefs was feized with a fever, about
the period in Queen Anne’s reign when twelve peers were created at once ;
and, in her delirium, Hill true to the bufkin and Melpomene, exclaimed in
blank verfe,
Ha, ha ! and fo they make us Lords by dozens !
She foon after paid the univerfal tribute, and was interred at Afton, in
Middlcfex; in the church-yard of which village is the following epitaph.
Near this place
Lies the body of Elizabeth Barry,
Of the Parifh of St. Mary Le Savoy;
Who departed this life the yth. of November> 1713,
Aged 55 Tears.
To which the compiler of thefe anecdotes takes the liberty to fubjoin a.
few lines.
The fcene is clos’d, the curtain dropt,
And famous Barry’s part is o’er :
The mufic of that tongue is ftopt,
Which footh’d and charm’d us heretofore!
Veil’d are thofe eyes, once piercing bright;
Thofe rofe-lips faded, late fo red;
That once-fine form, unfit for fight,
Laid low, to mingle with its bed 1
Yet, tho’from earth’s vain ftage by Death now driv’n,
An Angel’s part we truft lhe’ll aft in heav’n!
