TT has been juftly obferved that the lives of private men ffiould only bo
A publiffied when their virtues are very fhining, and their goodnefs fo re-
markable, that their example may be beneficial to mankind* j in this
clafs we may venture to place the fubject of thefe memoirs. He was the
youngeft brother of Judge Turner (fee p. 12) and was born at MiltomErnis,
May 14, 1619. In his political character he was attached to the Crown,
and was adtive in its fervice ; when Briftol was taken by Prince Rupert, he
was appointed Treafurer and Paymafter to the garrifon there, and was
made prifoner at the battle of Worcefter, 1651, being then a Captain of
Horfe. As a reward for thefe fervices he was to have been a Knight of
the Royal Oak; but that order not taking place, he was knighted in
1663, about which time he was a Commiffioner of the Alienation Office,
Surveyor General of the Out Ports, and one of the chief Farmers of the
Cuftoms.
In 1654 he married Margaret daughter of Sir John Harrifon of Balls Co«
Herts, Knt. by whom he became poffeffed of the manor of Stoke-
Rochford, in Lincolnffiire, where he refided, and ferved the office of
Sheriff of the county in 1681.
Dame Margaret Turner died July 30, 1679, leaving iffiie one fon, John
Turnor, Efqj who married Diana, only child of the Honourable Algernon
