Two Poems
(The one whereof was Penn’d by Mi It on, and the other by Clieweland) Upon the Death of a worthy and
learned young Gentleman, Mr. Edward King, who was drowned in the Irijh Seas: to which is added a
Latin Paraphrafe on both, which was penn’d by W. H. London, Printed for the author, 1694.”
<( To the Reader. This Worthy Gentleman, Mr. Edward King was a fellow Student with Milton and
Clieveland in Chrifts Colledge in Cambridge: Who having failed from Chefter, the Ship that he was in
foundered upon a Rock on the Irijh Seas. Some efcapedin the Boat, and great endeavours were ufed in that
o-reat confternation to get him into the Boat, which did not prevail. So he and all with him were drowned,
except thofe only that efcaped in the Boat: Now he was a perfon generally beloved in his Life, which made
him fo much lamented at his Death, among whom was this Milton and Cleveland.
I was defired by others to make thefe two Tranftations, which was the occafion that I penned them. I was
advifed to put them in the Prefs, and that which encouraged me to adventure to do it, was hopes that inge-
nious Gentlemen will communicate tokens of their kindnefs to me, for at this time my neceffity is very great:
Thefe Poems will afford a high and innocent recreation.”
