Lady Bolingbroke died in March, 1749-50, and lies buried in the fame
vault with her lord in Batterfea church ; on the north wall of which, near
the altar, a monument by Roubiliac was eredted to their memory, on
which are medallions with profiles, in baflo relievo, of both of them, well
executed in white marble, and the following infcription:
“ Here lies
“ Henry St. John,
fC In the reign of Queen Anne
“ Secretary of War, Secretary of State,
“ And Vifcount Bolingbroke :
il In the days of King George the fir ft and King George the fecond,
“ Something more and better.
“ His attachment to Queen Anne
cc Expofed him to a long and fevere perfecution :
“ He bore it with firmnefs of mind,
“ The enemy of no national party,
“ The friend of no faction ;
“ Diflinguifhed 'under the cloud of a profcription,
tf which had not been entirely taken off)
“ By zeal to maintain the liberty,
l( And to reflore the ancient profperity,
“ of Great-Britain.
He died the 1 2th of December,
