Sir John alfo published a Hiftory of Mufick in five volumes, 4to. 1777 5
and a Life of Dr. Johnfon, 1787 . He was born in 1718 ; and died at his
houfe in the Broad Sanctuary, Weftminfter, May 21, 1789,

His attention to jurifprudence did not fupprefs his love for elegant
literature, of which he gave eftimable proof in the republication
of Walton and Cotton’s “ Complete Angler ” with notes by himfelf, and
cuts defigned by Wale, and engraved by the unfortunate Ryland : this
moft pleating book went through four continually-improved editions
during his life ; the firft in the year 1760, the latter in 1784 ; and it has
been brought yet nearer perfection in a fifth, 1792, by his fon, John
Sidney Hawkins, the ingenious editor of “ Ignoramus?'

To the different lifts of performers in “ COMUS,” in 1735, and 1738, fhould have been added, that,
to the “ Prologue,” beginning, “ Our fiedfafl lardy no fpeaker’s name is prefixed in the editions of
either datej in that of 1735 we read “Epilogue. To be fpoken by Mrs. ‘Jones, in the Drefs of
Eufhrofyne, with the Wand and Cup.” which begins thus.

In“THE Se c on d En t t t o n,” 1738 (for there is an edition of that year, not fo denominated, which
has a table of “Errata,” at the back of the “ Dramatis Perfona:," not in the fubfequent one, and to
which no Epilogue is fubjoined), Mrs. Clive is fubftituted as fpeaker of the “ Epilogue,” inftead of Mrs.
Jone s.
In “ A Catalogue of the Scarce, Valuable, and Curious Collection of Mufic, Manufcript and Printed, of
the Reverend and Learned William Gostling, One of the Minor Canons of the Cathedral Church
of Canterbury, Lately Deceafed Sold by Auction by Meft'. Langford, May 1777 ; are fpecified (Lot 59)
the following Articles, with the annexed Note on them. “ Lawes’s Henry, Ayres and .Dialogues, with
his Head, 165 3—-Lawes’s Henry, 274 Songs," MS. and William Lawes’s Collection of Songs, MS.
N. B. Ehefe Songs of Henry and William Lawes arefever ally in their own Hand writing: In the formes
are the Songs in the Mafque of Comus, as Jet by the Author, at the Requejt of Milton, for the original Per-
formance thereof at Ludlow Caftky
