This may safely be applied to the Christian
world; since the fabrics appropriated to the
purposes of religion can never be entirely
neglected till a total disregard to religion first
prevails, and men have lost a sense of every
thing that is virtuous and decent. Whenever
this is the melancholy condition of a nation,
it cannot hope for, because it does not deserve,
the protection of Heaven; and it will be diffi-
cult to conceive a general reformation can
take place till the temples of the Deity are
restored to their proper dignity, and the pub-
lic worship of God is conducted in the beauty
of holiness."
