58 THE STORY OF ARCHITECTURE
says the Hindoo proverb; and the Greeks,
perhaps rightly, felt that its use would detract
from the simplicity and the feeling of repose to
which they endeavoured to give expression in
their designs.
Our knowledge of the domestic architecture
of Greece is derived almost entirely from
descriptions by contemporary writers, for no
remains of importance have survived. The
architecture and art of Pompeii savoured much
of Greek influence, and the Pompeian house,
described later, probably resembled in many
particulars the houses of the Greeks of the
earlier period.
