THE PARIS EXHIBITION

The carved cabinet-work of every kind, from
the massive piece of furniture to the delicately-
sculptured work-table or jewel-box for ladies'
use, contributed by the manufacturers of France,
is worthy every attention, and of the taste and
skill which characterise the decorative artisans of

that country. We introduce on this page a Coffer
in pear-wood, by M. Thiebault, of Paris, of rustic

design, the ornaments being copied from the fruit
and foliage of the vine; the lid is surmounted by
a couple of angry fowls in a fighting attitude. The
arrangement of the carved work, which is ample
without being overdone, is graceful, and the
execution is bold, yet delicate in the details.
