*, For an account of the chief English Collections the reader is referred to the Appen-
dix of Mr. Maxell's Defcription of the Ivories, Ancient and Medieval, in the
South Kenfington Mufeum, London, 1872. Befdes the private Collections of the
Rev. IF. Sneyd and that of Mr. Douce (novo broken up), to which he has
alluded on p. 175, there are a number of others, the owners of fome of which
have kindly allowed fictile copies to be made of feveral of their articles.
Reference in this Catalogue is alone made to fuch fictile copies. Many of thefe
gentlemen contributed fpecimens to the Exhibition of Ivory Carvings at the
Rooms of the Archaeological Inftitute on the 5th June 1863. (See fourn. Arch.
Inf. xx. p. 367, where their names are recorded.)
