exifting which was dignified by the appellation of a
Library ?

We are obliged by the exprefs teftimony of Strabo
to acknowledge, that the luftre of the Serapeum was
in his time fomewhat obfcured : but as he affigns the
reafon for this, namely a love of novelty then preva-
lent among the peoples, we may fuppofe that the neg-
lect did not continue long. The fame people, not many
years after this period, to demonftrate their returning
refpedf for their favourite deity Serapis, cruelly cele-
brated his anniverfary by the martyrdom of an Evange-
lift. It was at this feafon of general feftivity in Alexan-
dria1, that St. Mark expired in torments, under the
hands of a bigotted and fanguinary populace.
