INTRODUCTION.
It has been very justly observed by a celebrated author, that " in
every age of the world pleasure is, by poets and painters, made to hold
her chief court in a gardenand there are few minds so totally
debased as not to derive some gratification from the contemplation os
nature's gayest embellishments in the endless variety os beautisul
plants and ssowers. It cannot, therefore, be a matter os surprise that
the desire to produce imitations of objects that have assorded such real
gratification should be so universal. Notwithstanding this very natural
feeling, which would generally be considered as the sorerunner os
success in the attainment of this elegant accomplishment, the art os
drawing and painting ssowers has hitherto been considered a very
dissicult study, and but few have distinguished themselves in this most
interesting pursuit.
One of the principal causes os the sailure os so many persons, who
have an ardent desire to attain prosiciency in this highly usesul art, is
