either be finished with the pencil or coloured ; if the latter, they must
be kept very light, so that the animals may not be overpowered. The
animal seen in the distance, immediately over the female goat in the
foreground, is another species of goat, called the chamois. There are
none of this kind found in Britain, but they are very common in the Alps.
They are a very elegant animal, easily tamed, and very docile ; they
are most agreeable, lively, and active beyond expression ; their hair is
short, in spring it is of an ash colour, and in winter of a darkish brown;
their heads are crowned with two small horns of about a foot long,
of a beautiful black, and rising from the centre of the forehead, almost
between the eyes. The chamois is very particular in its food, choosing
the most delicate parts of plants, ssowers, and tender buds; it drinks
but very little, and ruminates like the goat in the intervals of feeding.
Goats are still found in their native state, bounding from crag to
crag, with fearless intrepidity, in the mountainous districts of Ireland,
Scotland, and Wales, particularly in the latter country, where they
were some time back uncommonly abundant; but the mischief done by
them in barking young plantations has nearly occasioned the extirpa-
tion of the race, and they are now to be found chiessy in the sastnesses
and recesses of the mountains of North Wales.
The common domestic goat is found in most parts of the world,
being able to endure, without inconvenience, the extremes both of
heat and cold; but its value is overlooked because the sheep so far
exceeds its utility to man, just as the ass is of little consequence
