burnt sienna and lake. In colouring the sish in water colours, it will
be best to commence with a very light wash os gamboge over the
whole of the fish, with the exception os a light streak that should be
left white down the centre srom the head to the tail; this, when the
drawing is finished, will sorm the brightest gloss on the projecting part
of the fish. When this is dry, take a stronger tint os yellow, mixed with
a little lake, and colour each scale separately, beginning at the end os
the scale nearest the body: this tint must not be brought to the outer
edge, but softened off so that the round edge os the scale may be lest
as light as possible. A bright tint os lake should be brought over the
dark yellow, and sostened off in the same way. The darkest touch is
given with a dark tint os burnt sienna, mixed with gum water. Is the
scales are worked in this manner separately, they will produce a most
brilliant essect, but they will be os the same colour all over the sish;
consequently it will be bright, though there will be no light and shade
upon the whole mass ; this can easily be supplied by taking a light
wash os lake over the back, and a wash os burnt umber over the under-
side os the sish. Aster the scales are coloured, the wash of bright
yellow sirst applied becomes the middle tint, and the brightest light is
given by the streak down the centre that is lest the colour os the
paper. The fins and tails are coloured with lake of disserent strengths
on a bright yellow ground; the whole touched up with gum on the
darkest parts.
The silver fish is treated in the same way, but with different colours.
A very light wash os indigo is taken over the whole os the sursace to
