character of the hair can be given by stippling over the colours pre-
viously laid on, with a tint a shade darker than the middle tint, taking-
care to work very sparingly on the shadows. The directions for the
sky, ground, and sigures need not be repeated, as they have been
given before, and practice will enable the student to make any
variation his taste may suggest; all that can be conveyed by written
instructions is the mechanical part of the art, to enable the student to
avoid the disagreeable obstacles that impede his entrance upon this
branch of study ; and he will sind that proficiency can only be obtained
by application, united to taste and judgment.
