A BOTTLE OF PECULIAR SHAPE.

of its patterns. The neck is ornamented with blossoms of
water-plants, and on each side of it sits a monkey. The devices
at the front and back are ar-
ranged in the manner of a
necklace, and below the
legend on the side relating
to the Deities, Pthah and
Pasht (Vulcan and Bubastis
or Diana), is a not inelegant
ornament. These vases or
bottles are generally of
glazed pottery, sometimes
partly vitrified; and they probably derived their shape from
the calabash so common in Africa (woodcut 30).
