BKENTHE, (CABITENA),
ON THE ALPHEUS, ARCADIA.
" The Valley represented in this Print, is the supposed scene of the
battle between the Gods and the Giants. To preserve the memory of
that dreadful contest, the inhabitants, on certain occasions, sacrificed to
tempests, to lightning, and the thunder."
Pausan. Chap. 28.29.
•' Nor were the Gods themselves more safe above,
Against beleaguer'd heav'n the Giants move.
Hills pil'd on hills, on mountains mountains lie,
To make their mad approaches to the sky.
Till Jove, no longer patient, took his time
T' avenge, with thunder, their audacious crime;
Red lightning play'd along the firmament,
And their demolish'd works to pieces rent.
Sing'd with the flames, and with the bolts transfixt,
With native earth, their blood the monsters mixt."
Ovid, Book 1.1.103.
