position from without, and considerable dis- 1
traction in his own mind, General Hutchin-
son, we are told, finally resolved upon -
marching on to Cairo.
The ’Lurks were then put in possession of )
the intrenched camp at Rabmanieh, and
they left about 300 men in the fort. The ■
vessels taken there, also, facilitated the con- |
veyance of the men’s knapsacks by water;
for, till that time, the troops not only carried
every thing themselves, but even the officers
were not allowed to take any more bag- i
gage than they chose to carry on their own i
backs. I
Here another instance presents itself of I
the singular want’of discipline and regularity
among the Turkish auxiliaries : — On the
O
army advancing through a fine corn-country ,
on the morning of the 11th of May, and
being again guilty of disorders which the
Caia Bey attempted to restrain, he was hoot-
ed at, and compelled to suffer them ; such as
the rifling of the pest-houses, &c. But, as
the English still retained more authority over
the Turks in some cases than their masters,
the inhabitants were rejoiced to see the Bri-
tish columns immediately following in regu-
lar order. In fact, the British soldier re-
quired nothing from them but water, and for
this he frequently paid.
An Egyptian village, according to Sir R. |
Wilson’s opinion, has no parallel. An Irish
hut, he thinks, is a palace compared with an I
Arab’s hog-stie. These habitations, made of
