The Turks were extremely averse to Ma-
dame Menou’s quitting Egypt; but, as the
English General was resolute in the avowal
of his determination to protect her, they
waved the point.
The 30th regiment took possession of the
fort of Sowlkowski on the 28th of June,
while that of Giza was occupied by the gre-
nadiers of the line, and a detachment of the
Captain Pacha’s body-guard : the latter was
intended as a personal compliment to that
officer by the French General ; as it had been
expressly agreed upon in the capitulation,
that no Turks were to take possession of the
forts.
Colonel Paget was on the same day given
up as a hostage to the French ; who, in re-
turn, sent Colonel Langlois to the British,
and Colonel Touissard to the Captain Pacha:
and thus the surrender of Cairo crowned the

accompanied the

hazardous and daring march planned by Ge-
neral Hutchinson’s judgement, and perfected
by his resolution. This advantage also se-
cured Egypt, by necessarily involving in it
the speedy fall of Alexandria.
Dispatches with this important intelligence
were sent off to England, by Colonel Mon-
tresor, on the 2d of July ; and the French
officers, who were to arrange the embarkation
of their troops for France, ;
