A VIEW OF THE PORTICO OF HOMER NEAR SMYRNA.

It at present consists of seven large shafts of columns of Thasian marble, called Porta-
Santa by the moderns. The shaft of the fifth column only has a base of white marble,
and by its form shews that it has formerly supported an arch of the pier, of which,
there are now no remains, The Portico is divided by the public road leading from
Smyrna to Magnesia; on each side of it is a Turkish burying ground planted with lofty
eypresses.
