SCULPTURE OF THE TEMPLE OF MINERVA.
1 The townships Theseus united to form the city,
were twelve in number, (Strabo, lib. ix.) including the
Cecropia, or Acropolis. Stephanus Byzantinus, there-
fore, in saying that Theseus induced eleven town-
ships to form one city in the Cecropia, was not mis-
taken, as Meursius thinks, who would read ttvelve
