Sino-le figures always refer to the verses. Roman figures have
been employed for the chapters or acts in contradistinction to the
pages, e. q., in the quotations from the Balaramayana.
I have to record my thanks to the Committee of the Imperial
Academy of Sciences of Vienna, which entrusted me with the
preparation of this edition of the Mankbakosa; to Iv. M. Chatfield,
Esq., the late Director of Public Instruction, Bombay ; to the
Government of India, and to Professor Stein, of Lahore, for the
loan of the manuscripts ; to Professor Pischel for placing at my
disposal his copy of the Berlin MS. of the Visvakosa ; and last,
not least, to Hofrath G. Buhler, who first drew to light the Maii-
khakosa, and who, with his continued help and encouragement,
furthered the publication of this book.

TH. ZACHARIAE.

Halle, January 29th, 1897.
