works were composed by two different Theras bearing the same name. In favour of the former supposition,
it may be urged that as Paramattha Vinicchaya and Abhidhammattha Sangaha are both ascribed by
tradition to the same author, the writer meant to say that both the works were written by the same
Anuruddha Thera, but in that case we should have expected the writer to use some such expression as
“ (“ Teneva Therena”) or “ S'ajS'S3©5'd<5^3G'^sd” (“ Teneva Therapadena”) by the same
Thera or author, but no such expression is found in these verses, although the author uses these expres-
sions in this very chapter where two or more works are ascribed to the same author. It may also be remarked
that if he meant to say that Abhidhammattha Sangaha was composed by another Anuruddha Thera, he
should have expressed himself in clearer terms, whereas as it now stands, the information he gives of the
author of Abhidhammattha Sangaha is very meagre, almost amounting to a truism. All that he says is that
the work was written by Anuruddha Thera, a fact already mentioned in the colophon of the text itself.
If the former supposition be the correct one, then neither Ceylon nor Burma can claim the honour
of having produced the author of the great work, but the credit belongs to Southern India, of which Kan-
cipura was a well-known city.
