{VENDO a scrivere de i disegni
degli edificj, noi raccorremo
e porremo in quella nollra opera
tutte le cose migliori e più
eccellenti che da nostri Antichi
conosceremo elTerne state scrirte,
e quelle ancora ch'eglino osservarono nel far dette
opere : & a quelle aggiugneremo, sé co'l pensiero,
ingegno, o fatica noltra l'avremo trovata cosa alcuna
che ci paja da essere tisata. Ma desiderando, nello
scrivere limili cose, difficili certo & aspre e nella
maggior parte oseurissìme, di essere apertishmi,
& il più che si può, facili ce espediti ; secondo
il coltume nostro dichiareremo qualcosa sra quella,
allaquale noi vogliamo dar principio. Percioc-
ché da quello appariranno in fonte le origini di
quelle cose che dire si debbono, da non essere
in verità disprezzate : onde poi le altre cose più
intelligibilmente si diranno. Comìncicremo adun-
que in quella maniera : Lo edificare conlìlle tutto
in disegni & in muramenti. Tutta la forza
e la regola de i disegni conside in sapere con
buono e perfetto ordine adattare e congiugnere
inlieme linee ce angoli, onde la taccia dello edi-
ficio si comprenda e li formi. Appartiensi certo,
& è officio del disegno, invelligando (labilire a gli
cdiiicj & alle parti loro, luogo atto, numero
determinato, maniera bella, ce ordine grazioso,
acciocché poi rutta la forma di elso edificio pro-
porzionata si ritrovi. Né a il disegno in sé islinto
di seguitare la Materia, ma é tale, che noi cono-
seiamo che il medeGmo dileguo é in molti edi-
sicj, purché noi vegliamo in elli una ìnedesiina
forma cioè purché le parti loro, il sico, e
gli ordini di quelle sirmo in tutto limili fra lo-

transeribe into this our Work,
all the moll curious and useful
Observations left us by the An-
cients, and which they {.ather'd
in the actual Execution of these Works ; and to
these we Hull join whatever we ourselves may
have discover'd by our Study, Application and
Labour, that seems likely to be of Use. But as
we delire, in the handling this difficult, knotty^
and commonly obseure Subject, to be as clear and
intelligible as possible ; we ihall, according to our
Cullom, explain what the Nature of our Sub»
jeil is ; which will ihew the Origin of the im-
portant Matters that we are to write of, at their
very Fotmtain-Head, and enable us to exprcis
the Things that follow, in a more easy and pcr-
spicuous Style. We sliall therefore first lay down,
that the whole Art of Building consills in the
Design, and in the Structure. The whole Fores
and Rule of the Design, consills in a right and
exact adapting and joining together the Lines
and Angles which compose and form the Face of
the Building. It is the Property and Business
of the Design to appoint to the Edisice and all
its Parts their proper Places, determinate Num-
ber, jull Proportion and beautiful Order; so
that the whole Form of the Structure be pro-
portionable. Nor has this Desism any thing that
makes it in its Nature inscparahle from Matter;
sor we see that the same Design is in a Multi-
tude of Buildings, which have all the lame
Form, and are exactly alike as to the Situation
of their Parts and the Disposition of their Lines
