Imperocché alcuni line fanno pubblici, alcuni pri-
vati, alcuni iacvi, alcuni socolari, alcuni servono
all'uio ed alla neccllicà, ed alcuni servono all'
ornamento delle Città, cJ alcuni alla bellezza de'
Tempi Ma non per quello sarà pedona che
nieglii che tutti non liana derivati da quelli prin-
cipe che noi abbiamo detti, le quali cole elFen-
do così, è manifello che tutta l'arte dello edili-
care conlille in sei cose, lequali son quelle : la
Regione, il Sito, lo Scompartimento, le Mura, le
Coperture ed i Vani. E sé quelli fondamenti
saranno da principio compre!!; s'intenderanno più
facilmente quelle cose che in apprelTo dobbiamo
deserivere. Definiremole adunque cosi : La Re-
gione apprelTo di noi dove il abbia ad edificare,
sarà un' ampio ed aperto luogo per tutto : Una
parte della quale sarà il Sito, ed il Sito sarà un
certo spazio denominato del luogo, ilquale sarà
cinto intorno di muro ad uso e ad utilità. Ma
sotto il nome di Sito, verrà ancora ogni spazzo
di elio edificio, ilquale noi premeremo (palleggian-
do con le piante de' piedi. Lo Scompartimento
è quello che divide tutto il Sito dell' edifìcio in
Siti minori, laonde aviene che di cosi fatte et
adattate membra iniieme, par che Io edificio sui
di minori edificj ripieno. Muro chiamiamo noi
ogni muraglia che, movendo da terra, il alza in
alto a reggere il peso delle coperture, e quella
muraglia ancora che è tirata all' intorno dell'
edificio, per ricingere il vuoto di quello. Coper-
ture non chiamiamo noi quelle sellamente che nel-
le più alte parti degli edificj Hanno espoile a rice-
vere le pioggie ; ma copertura è ancora rutto
quello che in lungo ed in largo si dillende {opra
il capo di chi spalTcggia, infra le quali sono i
palchi, le volte a mezza botte, e le volte ordinarie,
ed altre limili. Vani chiamiamo noi tutti quelli
Aditi che sono per tutto nell' edificio, onde pos-
sano entrare ce useir tutte le cose che fanno
di bisogno a chi vi ha da llar dentro. Di quelli
adunque parleremo e delle parti di ciaseheduno,
ma prima noi racconteremo alcune cose le quali,
o iiano pur principj, o veramente annellate ed
usate con i Principj di quella noilra incominciata
opera, sono certamente molto a proposito. Im-
perocché avendo coniìderato sé si trovi alcuna
cosa, che gioii a qual li voglia di quelle parti
che dette abbiamo ; tre cose troviamo da non
lasciarsì certamente in dietro, le quali invero ed alle
coperture ed alle mura, ed alle altre cose (imili
molto li convengono : E sono quelle. Che cia-
seuna di loro sia commoda, e (opra tutto sana,
in quanto al suo determinato e dellinaro uso : sia
intera, salda e perpetua, e quali che eterna,

Some are public k, sonie private, sonie saered,
sonie profane, some serve (or Use and Necellity,
sonie for the Ornament of our Cities, or the
Beauty of our Temples : but no body will there-
fore deny, that they were all derived from the
Principles abovementioned : which being so, it
is evident, that the whole Art of Building con-
sills in six Things, which are these : the Region,
the Seat or Platform, the Compartition, the
Walling, the Covering and the Apertures ; and
if tbele Principles are firll thorowly conceived,
that which is to follow will the more casily be
underslood. We lliall theresore define them thus,
the Region with us Ilia 11 be the whole large
open Place in which we are to build, and of
which the Seat or Platform lliall be only a Part :
but the Platform lliall be a determin'd Spot os
the Region, circumscribed by Walls for Use and
Service. But under the Title of Platform, we
(hall likewise include all those Spaces of the
Buildings, which in walking we tread upon with
our Feet. The Compartition is that which sub-
divides the whole Platform of the House into
smaller Platforms, so that the whole Edifice thus
form'd and conllituted of these its Members,
seems to be full of lesler Edifices : by Walling
we (hall undersland all that Structure, which is
carried up from the Ground to the Top to sup*
port the Weight of the Roof, and such also as
is raised on the Inside of the Building, to se-
parate the Apartments ; Covering we (hall call
not only that Part, which is laid over the top of
the Edifice to receive the Rain, but any Part too
which is extended in length and breadth over
the Heads of those within ; which includes all
Ceilings, hals-arch'd Roofs, Vaults, and the like.
Apertures are all those Outlets, which are in
any Part of the Building, for the convenience of
egress and regress, or the Passage of Things ne-
celTary for the Inmates. Of these therefore we
sliall rrcar, and of all the Parts of each, having
firll premised sonie things, which whether they
are Principles, or neceslary Concomitants of the
Principles of this Work which we have under-
taken, are certainly very much to our purpose :
For having conlider'd, whether there was any
thing that might concern any of those Parts
which we have enumerated ; we found three
things by no means to be neglected, which re-
late particularly to the Covering, the Walling,
and the like : Namely, that each of them lie
adapted to Come certain and determinate Con-
veniency, and above all, be wholclome. That
they be firm, solid, durable, and in a manner
eternal,
