die ausgezeichneten und ganz seltenen Eigenschaften dieses
Mannes erkannt und benutzt zu haben. In ihm war
alles vereinigt, was zu dem Gelingen eines solchen Unter-
nehmens berechtigen konnte: Muth, Entschlossenheit, Er-
findungskraft, Geschicklichkeit, Beharrlichkeit, und ein edles

der Berechnung und des Eigennutzes, sondern zu einem

Going to the house of the British Consul (Mr. Salt), I ’found Mr.
Burckhardt tliere: it seemed he had persuaded the Consul to
avail himself of the opportunity ofmy ascending the Nile by 0He-
ring to pay half the expence. Accordingly, when I informed
the Consul of my intented journey, and that I came to requcst
he would do me the favour to obtain a firman for mo from the
basliaw, he expressed joy — and I was tlien informed that they
had made up their minds to have the colossus conveycd down
the Nile, and to offer it as a present to the British Museum, if
I would kindly undertahe the reinoval of it.
