block, 13 feet by 9 by upwards of 5, lies in the ditch.
About 28 yards west of this stone, the hill has risen considerably,
and we are opposite the middle of a swelling in the outer mound,
which here again assumes very large dimensions, similar to the
abnormality described in section Croy No. 3. The fosse is 41
feet wide and 12 deep. Here the actual stony bottom appears to
be little more than a foot deeper than the present grass-grown
surface. At the depth of about 11 feet, the sides of the ditch
have approached within about 7 feet of each other. The outer
mound, with a solitary thorn growing on it, is prominent and
striking. It is tolerably level on the top for 21 feet, when there
begins a fall of 12| feet in 34, reaching at that point (55 feet from
the counterscarp) the natural level, still a gradual descent. This
part of the mound is considerably elevated for 29 yards length-
wise, measuring from east to west. There is a kind of gap or
falling down of the mound to the west of this. A few feet
further on, a huge stone, 10 feet by 6£, lies in the very middle of
the ditch.
About 150 yards west of Croy No. 5, the fosse is 41 feet wide
and 10 feet deep. The outer mound swells slightly upward for
15 feet from the counterscarp, then sinks 2|- feet in 12, and finally
falls swiftly about 10 feet in 33, reaching the still falling ground
level about 60 feet north of the counterscarp.
Croy.—Section No. 6.

obliterated externally.']
This cutting, 731 feet west of Croy No. 5, and 180 feet east of a
stone dyke, is on the crown of the first or eastmost ridge of Croy
Hill. The stone base is only 1 foot below the surface. There
are exceptional appearances at this point, as if there might have
been some upheaped earthen erection besides the vallum here ;
but the remains even of the vallum are most meagre, and all is
indistinct. The ground near this occasionally rises into sudden
rocky knolls, and the exceptional appearances, not only on the
vallum here, but on the outer mound elsewhere as described
