VI PREFACE TO THE

I shall here suggest, because I
think the text did not warrant the
translation, that the sleeping room
and apartments described by Pliny,
(page 85) as free from noise or
other disturbance, were most like-
ly the rooms occupied by himself,
and were what we should call the
master's apartments: the conveni-
ences and situation of which appear
fully to authorise his partiality to
them.

To the dictionary, besides many
